THE 14TH NITI CONGRESS AND ITD 2016
The 14th NITI Congress was held, together with the 2016 International Translation Day (ITD) on 27th and 28th October 2016 at the Rayfield hotel, Asokoro, Abuja. The previous day, as earlier announced, new applicants faced the NITI Exam/Assessment Council to prove their mettle as qualified translators, after which they took part in the proceedings of the congress proper. In a brief induction ceremony, the new members were officially received by the National President, Prof. Hafizu Miko Yakasai, as well as by the whole NITI family present, after which there was a group photo session with the new members. At the end of the two-day event, the following communique was issued:
Considering the theme of this congress: Translation & Interpretation: Connecting Nigeria to the Rest of the World, and the growing possibility of using what we have to get what we need, the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters hereby calls for partnership with the Nigerian public and private sectors: National Film Sensors Board, Ministry of Culture, the Linguistic Association of Nigeria, Nollywood, etc, in order to harness the power of translation and interpretation to really and lucratively connect Nigeria to the rest of the world.
Knowing how much training and retraining can make or mar a career, the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters makes a call to all Nigerian public and private organisations who have linguists in their employ to co-operate with NITI and give their staff the necessary training they need to move their careers forward and enhance their ability to connect Nigeria to the Rest of the World. Language training needs are being identified and the next training course will be held online in March-April 2017.
Mindful of the positive results of the recent visit of NITI Executives to the National Assembly, the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters appeals to the esteemed Legislative Organ to expedite action and pass the NITI Bill into Law so that the practice of this all important profession can be better regulated for optimum results.
