Welcome to the website of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI), the accreditation body of language professionals in Nigeria.
A number of people have asked if NITI trains translators and interpreters. That is why it is pertinent to clarify here that NITI is not a training school, but a professional association, the accreditation body, the regulator and protector of the translation and interpretation profession in Nigeria. NITI might establish a school of translation and interpretation in the future, but presently, it is a body of qualified professional linguists (Professors, Doctors, Masters, Bachelors, etc), as well as future professional linguists (language students) who were trained or are being trained in Nigeria or elsewhere in the world. NITI is to Nigerian Translators and Interpreters as NBA is to Nigerian Lawyers, NMA is to Nigerian Doctors, ICAN is to Nigerian Accountants, etc. NITI professionals work in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Latin, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and other Nigerian languages. Practicing linguists and language students can apply for NITI membership HERE.
The NITI website was created in 2007 just after the institute's highly successful 7th Congress and Workshop at the University of Lagos, Akoka. We have since then had many meetings, at the Abuja and all other branches nationwide, culminating in a Congress and workshop, the 8th in the series, which was held in Abuja in July 2008 and was highly successful. Check out the final Communique HERE. A lot more activities have taken place since then. We have been holding regular meetings, especially at the Abuja branch. We had the International Translation Day celebration in 2009. We gave out NITI Awards to deserving recipients.
The NITI Bill passed the Second Reading at the floor of the National Assembly. Thereafter, the House invited NITI for the Public Hearing of the Bill Process; we honoured the invitation in grand style and it was a memorable occasion. Hopefully, the NITI Bill will become Law sooner than anybody expects.
In 2010, we started with the implementation of our earlier decision to institute examinations for professional linguists who intend to come into the NITI Fold. Letters have been sent out to employers of language professionals to encourage them to register with us and enjoy the benefits of membership. Worldwide publication of the exam dates and the exam proper will be done periodically to admit new members. The first membership examination was held successfully in May 2010. We are also extending our long standing career guidance by visiting institutions of higher learning to give career guidance talks. A lot more information in respect of our activities can be seen at the NITI BLOG.
